Antioch Baptist Church of Deanwood

Pastor Emeritus

Bio of Rev. Dr. William H. Gibbs
Pastor Emeritus

Dr. William H. Gibbs was educated in the Fauquier County Public Schools. He attended the Washington Bible College, the Moody Bible Institute for Biblical Studies and received an undergraduate degree from the Eastern Theological Seminary in Lynchburg, Virginia, and a Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Washington Saturday College, in Washington, D.C.

He was licensed to preach on January 13, 1980, and ordained on September 13, 1980. He has been preaching and teaching God's Word for over 35 years. He became pastor of the Antioch Baptist Church of Deanwood in March 1993.

Under his leadership and by the direction of the Holy Spirit, Antioch grew spiritually, physically and financially. The Holy Spirit directed Dr. Gibbs to speak with his congregation and lead them to a better understanding of how God expects them to serve Him. We moved from calling our various boards, clubs and auxiliaries of the church to ministries, thereby making it clear that we are serving God not man and in doing so we glorify Him. The individual ministries grew in numbers but more importantly servant hood.

Dr. Gibbs spearheaded the church’s building and enhancement project. The edifice now houses many classrooms to facilitate our Church School Ministry and Bible study classes. His vision was that there will be 90% participation in these teaching ministries. Along with the expansion of the classrooms, the Wheeler Memorial Fellowship Hall was refurbished and includes state-of-the-art audio visual equipment which makes it not only a beautiful dining hall but additional space for educational institutes and various preaching and teaching workshops. The kitchen, office suites and main sanctuary received a facelift to include enhanced lighting and advanced audio visual equipment. Dr. Gibbs is married to the lovely former Sister Tammie Ragsdale. Dr. Gibbs has four children and eight grandchildren.

Dr. Gibbs retired from the pastorate of the Antioch Baptist Church on January 31, 2015. Now, Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Gibbs continues his membership with the D.C. Baptist Ministers Conference, Mount Bethel Baptist Association and the Progressive National Baptist Convention. He serves on the Executive Board of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission.

Dr. Gibbs is a true man of God, an anointed preacher, teacher, proven leader and servant. His life verse is, "For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain".
